What to cover roses with and whether to cover them at all?
With dry peat suitable for plants! In our opinion, this is the best material for covering rose seedlings, because it is breathable. We recommend covering the rose with dry peat in a layer of 5-10 cm.
There is no need to rush with wintering in the fall until there has been frost for several days, so as not to blow them away.
Subjectively, we can say that we winterize our own roses only for peace of mind in the first year and pay more attention to winter only to hybrid tea roses, because Latvian winters are relatively moderate, but I would recommend that the biggest enthusiasts and rose lovers follow the weather forecast, which will help you understand how much and what a rose needs.
If the winter promises to be particularly harsh, you can use spruce branches in addition to peat, but you need to be especially careful with them in the spring so that the roses do not blow away.
If only spruce branches are used, it is important not to rush to remove them in the spring, while there are still very sharp temperature changes.
There is no single recipe. What works in one garden may not work in another. This can even be observed in the same bed, but in different locations.
The main thing is not to get upset if something does not work out. It is a natural process that must be loved in its entirety, accepting that not everything can always be predicted perfectly even by the most experienced gardener.
