Should roses be pruned before or after winter?
Although pruning can be done both before and after winter (depending on the situation), we prefer to prune roses in the spring, when after winter it is already clear what has overwintered and what has not, so it is much easier to assess the situation and not overdo it.
If you wish, you can cut/prune the weakest or diseased shoots in the fall, if any.
There are 2 categories for which we do not particularly recommend pruning: park roses and climbing roses. Park roses are a very hardy group that, in our experience, grow most impressively when they are not touched unnecessarily. In turn, climbing roses are recommended to be carefully bent (if possible) and covered, avoiding pruning as much as possible, because most climbing rose varieties bloom on the shoots of the previous year.
